Sure Kerry goofed in terms of political gamesmanship (what's new?) but... Kerry is, like it or not, an intellectual. He tends to out-think himself and the audience he is attempting to woo. Kerry was telling a JOKE that proved to be too intellectual (with too fine of a distinction) for our dumbed-down Americans to get at the level he intended them to "get it." He was referring to George W. Bush who is self-admittedly not intellectually curious and whose transcripts show he was not the brightest of students (even though he had the winds of academic prestige at his back). As a rule Americans, in recent decades, detest really "smart" people.... MORE

Bush Moves Toward Martial Law Public Law 109-364, or the "John Warner Defense Authorization Act of 2007" (H.R.5122) (2), which was signed by the commander in chief on October 17th, 2006, in a private Oval Office ceremony, allows the President to declare a "public emergency" and station troops anywhere in America and take control of state-based National Guard units without the consent of the governor or local authorities, in order to "suppress public disorder." The least that can be said and perhaps the most important thing to say about this is, "Don't Be Afraid!" Fear, more than bad law itself, is what paralyzes justice. A... MORE

Blind Allegiance to the Flag The Pledge of Allegiance "Blind" has yet to be a added (at least officially) to a manmade, not God spoken, pledge to the U.S. flag. This ever-changing manmade pledge is just that... ever-changing, just like the physical appearance of our flag. Stagnant, conservative thinking tends to treat such pledges as if God-spoken and written in stone. Perhaps the greatest lie is to put carnal words in God's mouth and then tell our children they are God's own, inspired words... And perhaps the greatest sin is then to have them "blindly" recite it over and over and over again.... MORE

I wrote this piece in 2004, as requested, for the Democratic Party in Paducah Kentucky. I generally vote for Democrats but I "belong" to no political party. I am voting Green and Democrat this cycle. Because I am a "free" citizen I fear not disclosing my politics. Why should any American fear disclosing one's politics? One answer is "Employers." Employers have become a proxy police force of sorts for the powers that be. Friends, if you fear voicing your politics because your employer might fire you or otherwise penalize you for having politics inconsistent with the company owners' politics something is seriously wrong! This is not freedom w... MORE

Carrots and Sticks: The Value of Nuance In Response to: http://www.newsbull.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=37706&pollresults=1 I invite all to read JB Williams essay on war. I say war because his entire message is a prescription for war with the end result being oppression of the loser by the winner. If I was an advocate of perpetual war and pit bull humanity I might agree with JB Williams. But even then I would agree with Williams only if I believed I "happened" to have been born into a nation that I knew could back up my macho claims with the most powerful and sophisticated military on earth. Such a nation is the equivalent of th... MORE

I remember J.D. Hayworth the Sports Anchor, KTSP. I believe he denounced the likes of Pete Rose for gambling on baseball. Isn't accepting "legalized" bribe money from the coal, gas, and mineral industries even worse than betting on baseball? At least Pete Rose gave 100% to win for his team every single game he played in. Special interests are not gambling on Hayworth... they own him and Hayworth is brazen enough to flaunt that fact. Has our nation lost all its sense of morality and fair play? ...and I am not talking baseball.... MORE

The LCV list could have included many others but seven is seven. This list was one of unlimited number of ways to reveal those who fail to understand and appreciate the fact that we have one planet earth to sustain us. Illinois Reprentative, John Shimkus (R), for example, has a score of zero (0) on the LCV Scorecard. Those who demonstrate a contempt for nature have that right... or do they? Do you live in a bubble? Call it Compromise, Cooperation or Whatever - No matter how those who frame the issue frame it, wilderness is a finite matter. Compromise and cooperation with those who seek to tame wilderness produces one result: "less wilderness." This is not a political statement. This is an irrefutable mathematical fact. That said, there will be those reading this who will try to deny the physical realites of life and contend wilderness protectors should "give" in their position and if they do not they are being rigid, unreasonable, radical and so on. Who, really, is radical when an objective assessment of the state of planet earth is considered?... MORE

Good News is Inherently Accepted More Readily Than Is Bad News. No better example of this is the disturbing news about global warming. Endless arguments have arisen to discredit 298 of 298 peer-reviewed scientific studies by a mix of independent, government, and corporate scientists. These studies, involving thousands of scientists, conclude human caused global warming exists and is significantly contributing to a set of climatic changes that are approaching a threshold that if crossed will set in motion natural events that at least will be upredictable and at worst catastrophic. Denial of bad news is an epidemic in our nation of pleas... MORE

I think the Democrats should control Congress after the elections because: Republicans, having had the advantage of full control of House and Senate, White House, Supreme Court Appointments, Cabinet Appointments, and with mainstream media winds like those blown by FOX News have demonstrated the greed, hypocrisy, and imperialistic nature of their politics. As George W. Bush is so fond of saying, "results matter." We are living the results of Republican Dominated Governance.... MORE

"Willful Neglect" is the best description of Speaker of the House, Dennis Hastert's, and Page Program Co-chairman, John Shimkus's behavior regardling the Foley saga. Please vote to remove both of these representatives from their House positions. They have embarrassed Illinoisans and, worse, sacrificed the well-being of Pages by allowing 16 year old children to live in an unsavory environment to avoid embarrassing their self-righteous party.
