More Money, Less Knowledge

This year, the economy promises to make Independence Day less explosive than usual.
“In yet the latest reminder of the economic crisis,” The Washington Post reported recently, “more than 40 communities across the country have already cancelled their Fourth of July fireworks.” Families are cutting back too, of course. The savings rate has risen to its highest level in 15 years and consumer spending is down as people focus on making ends meet.
At least one industry, though, is bucking the cost-saving trend: higher... MORE

A Czar Too Far

“Too many cooks spoil the broth.” That’s common wisdom. So, will too many czars spoil the administration?
President Barack Obama recently introduced Kenneth Feinberg as America’s “compensation czar.” He’ll oversee executive pay at firms that have taken federal bailout money. Feinberg “will have broad discretion to set the salaries and bonuses for their five most senior executives and their 20 most highly paid... MORE

A Sure-Fire Economy Killer

Some things, virtually everyone agrees on. We all want a cleaner environment. And we all want a booming economy.
Last week, the House Energy and Commerce Committee approved a bill that’s being marketed as a way to give us a “better” environment. Unfortunately the legislation, sponsored by Democratic Reps. Henry Waxman of California and Edward Markey of Massachusetts, would inflict tremendous economic pain for no discernable environmental gain.
The bill would do two things... MORE

The Claw-Back Calamity

The drive to “claw back” executive bonuses is waning in Washington. Lawmakers are softening a House-passed bill to tax away big-money bonuses paid at bailed-out companies. Some felt the rhetoric had gone over the top.
“I don’t want people to think that businesses and people who have worked hard, performed well and received bonuses are going to be painted with the AIG brush,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said.
And that’s... MORE

Health-Care by Committee

A camel, they say, is a horse designed by committee. To take the expression further, let’s call it a committee of experts. After all, only “experts” could take something as graceful as a horse and replace it with something as difficult as a camel.
And that brings us to health care.
During his presidential campaign, President-elect Barack Obama promised to help uninsured Americans obtain coverage. But, “If you... MORE

Economic Elixir: A Coded Approach

Back in the 1990s President Bill Clinton and British Prime Minister Tony Blair crafted what they called a “third way” of governing. Supposedly this approach would be neither liberal nor conservative, but would split the difference.
Sounds fine in theory. It didn’t work that well in practice, though -- at least not to the satisfaction of liberals. Clinton and Blair found that, whether the issue was foreign or domestic policy, any attempt to find middle ground needed to be mostly... MORE

Americans are about to get a civics lesson -- and not a moment too soon.
Next month hordes of visitors will flood the National Mall to watch the swearing in of President-elect Barack Obama. Millions more will watch on television. But a study by the Intercollegiate Studies Institute shows that few Americans will really understand what they’re witnessing.
ISI gave more than 2,500 people a 33-question quiz about basic historical... MORE

Bridge Repair Mismanagement Undermines Highway Safety

In the months since the fatal collapse of the I-35W bridge in Minneapolis, safety concerns about the nation's 600,000 bridges have become a leading symbol of what many contend is America's crumbling infrastructure. And while an earlier Heritage article[1] and a subsequent federal report noted that design flaws—not a lack of money—may have been the chief cause of the collapse, many have used the tragedy to justify more government spending on the nation's infrastructure, including bridges.

The Obama and McCain Tax Plans: How Do They Compare?
Posting Member: Heritage Foundation

Either Republican Senator John McCain or Democratic Senator Barack Obama will have to make very important decisions on tax policy when he takes office in January 2009. First, the U.S. economy will be recovering from the financial crisis and is already predicted to grow less than its usual rate of 3.3 percent over the last 50 years.[1] Second, President George W. Bush's tax cuts will expire in 2011, and the President must decide how to extend or make permanent some of the tax cut provisions.
