GOVERNOR BUSH PRESENTS POINTS OF LIGHT AWARD TO JAY KISLAK

News Release!
GOVERNOR BUSH PRESENTS POINTS OF LIGHT AWARD TO JAY KISLAK

TALLAHASSEE—Governor Jeb Bush today recognized Jay Kislak of Miami as this week's Points of Light Award recipient. Kislak is the founder of the Jay I. Kislak Foundation, which is dedicated to fostering a greater understanding of the cultures and history of the Americas, with a particular emphasis on Florida, the Caribbean and Mesoamerica.

“Mr. Kislak’s commitment to research has provided students and educators with invaluable insights into Florida’s Hispanic heritage,” said Governor Bush. “His extraordinary generosity has enhanced education both in Florida and across the nation.”

Established in 1984, the Kislak Foundation supports programs in research and education, as well as exhibitions of books, maps, artwork and other cultural objects related to the early exploration of the Americas. Over several decades, Kislak and the foundation amassed one of the world’s finest collections of rare books, historic documents, manuscripts, maps and cultural artifacts. In 2004, the Kislak Collection was donated to the Library of Congress as a legacy to the nation. The collection is now the centerpiece of a broad array of scholarly studies and public programs.

During Hispanic Heritage Month, the Points of Light Award will recognize outstanding members of the Hispanic community dedicated to public service in Florida. The 2006 Hispanic Heritage Month theme is "La Florida: Honoring Our State's Spanish and Latin American Influences." The Governor's Points of Light Award, sponsored by Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises, recognizes a Florida resident or organization that demonstrates exemplary service to the community. Award recipients are announced weekly. A panel of judges comprised of leaders in the areas of volunteerism and service evaluate nominations and make recommendations to the Governor. The Volunteer Florida Foundation manages the program. For more information, or to nominate, go to www.VolunteerFloridaFoundation.org.
