Along with the “coming out” of militant atheism in recent years, there has been a growing perception that freedom of religion is tantamount to public freedom from religion and, such pursuit is a legitimate objective of The First Amendment. Such sentiment was displayed lately in an editorial I read, which postulated that the ideological separation between church and state was proscribed by the... MORE

(CNSNews.com) - Decisions by public schools and colleges to provide special prayer times or to make other allowances for Muslim students have raised eyebrows -- but not all groups that oppose expressions of religion in the public domain are speaking out. Some religious liberty advocates -- who have long battled efforts to purge government of religious displays, Bible readings and graduation prayers -- regard the Muslim-accomodation trend as an opportunity that should be seized. ... (AgapePress) - "My parents don't understand me!" This common lament of young people is generally shrugged off by parents who know that within a few short years Mom and Dad will suddenly seem much wiser. However, for many now in their late teens and early 20s -- from churched and unchurched backgrounds -- that classic complaint may have more veracity than in earlier generations. What makes the "boom echo" generation (born between 1977-2000) different from their parents and grandparents? "The way moral foundations have traditionally been formed is... MORE

(AgapePress) - A federal court is being asked to dismiss a lawsuit filed by the ACLU against a Delaware school board vice president, Reginald Helms, and his colleagues on the Indian River School District (IRSD) Board of Education. The board members were targeted in the suit because they were opening monthly board meetings with prayer. The controversy has an increasingly lengthy history. An official with the IRSD Board of Education contacted the Rutherford Institute back in August 2004, asking for help after the Wilmington, Delaware, branch of the American Civil Liberties Union demanded that board members stop opening... In the Manhattan Beach Unified School District, parents were recently invited to buy personalized tiles for a wall in a local school as part of a fundraising program. Fullerton, CA – School officials in Fullerton, California, have acknowledged that a history teacher crossed the line when he used a graded homework assignment to belittle students' religious beliefs. After a presentation on the infamous Scopes trial and the creation-versus-evolution debate, an American history teacher required his students to answer disparaging homework questions such as: "Are you willing to accept the truth as revealed by the newest and best methods of science or will you rely upon traditional notions that seemed to work for centuries?" Another question sought to undermine students' religious beliefs by asking: "Are the... MORE

(AgapePress) - A student columnist at North Carolina State University says there's a climate of anti-Christian bigotry on campus. Junior chemistry major Daniel Underwood says all of his science classes teach atheistic assumptions about the origin of life and the universe, but nothing about a divine creator. However, Underwood says that is just one aspect of the pervasive anti-Christian bias on display at NC State. "There's a marginalization of anyone who holds any sort of religious views firmly," says Underwood, who is a born-again Christian... MORE

(AgapePress) - Tennessee State University in Nashville has denied Muslims access to a room in which they hoped to hold a free course on Islam. The move came not long after the dean of a Bible college in nearby Cookeville questioned the taxpayer-funded course. Officials at TSU have told the Islamic Center of Nashville they will not be able to use the room on campus, but have not explained why. A week earlier, Kerry Duke, the dean of Tennessee Bible College, sent a letter to TSU president James Hefner proposing that the two schools co-host an open discussion between Duke and a representative from the Muslim community. But Duke says he never... MORE
