CBS Uses Rich to Warn McCain Away from Raising Ayers in Debate

CBS political correspondent Jeff Greenfield, who after last week's second presidential debate lashed out at John McCain for referring to Barack Obama as "that one" ("Was it demeaning? Was it an insult?"), just over two hours before the third and final debate suggested McCain should not bring up Williams Ayers or Jeremiah Wright -- and he used far-left/conservative-hating New York Times columnist Frank Rich, who he at least tagged a "liberal," as one of his experts. Citing Ayers and Sarah Palin's attack on Obama for "palling around" with him, Greenfield asked: "Is all this fair game? Yes, says a conservative writer." That would be Natio... MORE

CBS's Reid, an Ex-Biden Adviser, Touts Hagel's Blast at Palin

CBS News reporter Chip Reid, who was general counsel in 1987 for Joe Biden's short presidential run, on Thursday night, unlike his colleagues on ABC and NBC, highlighted how Republican Senator Chuck Hagel denigrated the qualifications of Biden's VP competitor, Sarah Palin. Reid concluded his CBS Evening News story by noting how "Senator Chuck Hagel, a Republican, says it's a 'stretch' to say 'Sarah Palin is qualified to be President,'" and, with matching text on screen, Reid read how Hagel told the Omaha World-Herald: "You get a passport for the first time in your life last year?"

CBS Channels Liberal Fretting Over Obama: 'Where's the Fight?'

With "Where's the Fight?" on screen under video of a man in New Hampshire who pushed Barack Obama ("When and how are you going to start fighting back?"), Katie Couric teased Friday's CBS Evening News: "Supporters of Barack Obama are frustrated and letting him know it." Couric set up the story by highlighting how "an Obama campaign official sent out a memo saying 'today is the first day of the rest of the campaign,' and vowing to take the fight to John McCain. But Dean Reynolds reports the new edge Obama tried out today wasn't sharp enough for some of his supporters."

CBS: Fair to Attack Palin Family Since They're 'Used' in Campaign
Posting Member: Media Research Center

While the majority of Thursday's CBS Early Show coverage of Sarah Palin's convention speech was positive, at the top of the 8am hour, co-host Maggie Rodriguez talked to Palin's sister, Heather Bruce, and asked: "There's been a lot of talk this weekend about family, talk that family is off limits in a campaign. Yet we see your sister with her kids, introducing them, showing them on camera, and she even mentioned you in her speech last night. So the question is, is it okay to use family in a campaign when it benefits the candidate and not okay when it's negative?"... MORE

CBS Declares McCain's Anti-Obama Ad 'a Stretch'

CBS reporter Dean Reynolds on Wednesday night described the attacks on the other candidate by Barack Obama and John McCain, but only felt McCain's required a correction. After conveying how Obama is painting McCain as "out of touch and asleep at the switch are two...Obama favorites," Reynolds cited a new McCain "ad attacking what it said was Obama's position on Iran." Viewers saw a clip of the ad: "Iran. Radical Islamic government, known sponsors of terrorism. Obama says Iran is a 'tiny' country, 'doesn't pose a serious threat.' Obama, dangerously unprepared to be President." Reynolds pounced: "But the ad is a stretch because this is... MORE

CBS Scolds McCain for 'Infamous' Ad, Empathizes with Obama

ABC, CBS and NBC all aired stories Thursday night about McCain's Britney Spears/Paris Hilton anti-Obama TV ad as well as John McCain's charge that Barack Obama is playing the race card, but only Katie Couric characterized the McCain spot as "infamous" before Dean Reynolds empathized with Obama by citing his "exasperation" with McCain's ad, based on headlines over liberal newspaper editorials asserted that McCain's "sharper edge" has been "criticized by several newspapers," declared "a voter in Racine called" McCain on his lack of civility, and ended with how, to address McCain's unfair attacks, the Obama campaign created a Web site called the... CBS Relays Obama-Backer Buffett's Specious Claim Rich Under-Taxed

Missing a golden opportunity to correct a specious presumption behind of Barack Obama and his liberal supporters that the wealthy are under-taxed, CBS reporter Chip Reid on Monday night highlighted how "ending the Bush tax cuts for people making more than $250,000 a year and using the money for a tax cut for the middle class" is one of Obama's highest priorities and one supported by "Warren Buffett, the richest man in the world who, despite his billions, says the rich are not taxed enough." Reid, who later in his story asserted "critics wonder how" McCain could possibly balance the budget "given his support for extending all of the Bush tax c... MORE

With Starbucks' announcement that it will closing 600 of its locations nationwide, the network morning shows on Wednesday heralded this news as another sign of a bad economy, as if anyone will notice 600 fewer Starbucks locations when there are so many. ABC's Bianna Golodryga on Good Morning America lamented that "Americans are struggling just to pay for a cup of Starbucks coffee." NBC's Matt Lauer's clever headline: "Trouble brewing -- Starbucks announces its closing 600 stores in the next year. Is the demand for $4 lattes dying in a tough economy?"

The broadcast network evening newscasts stories Thursday night all described Barack Obama's decision to opt out of public financing as a "flip-flop," a "reversal" and/or a "direct contradiction" of a pledge, but CBS's Dean Reynolds relayed Obama's rationalization -- that "he's opting out of the system to have enough money to fight the unlimited spending and what he called the 'smears' from unregulated Republican-allied organizations" -- and then, with 2004 anti-John Kerry ad clip on screen, forwarded his own example of a supposed past smear from the right: "Such as the Swift Boat group which attacked John Kerry in 2004."

Most Oppose Same-Sex Marriage, But CBS Focuses on Growing Support

CBS's own poll found more than two-thirds of Americans oppose same-sex marriage, but CBS News over the past few days gave a lot more time to supporters. On CBS's Sunday Morning, correspondent John Blackstone reported on the beginning of legal marriages in California starting Monday: "Even for people used to earthquakes, the California Supreme Court's decision last month to legalize same-sex marriage was a jolt. But even as gay couples make plans to wed this week...Opponents say tradition should and will be restored." Blackstone went on to talk to one such opponent: "Brian Brown of the National Organization for Marriage is confident Califor... MORE

Brokaw Scolds Letterman on 'Horrible' US; Environmental Hypocrisy

Tom Brokaw came aboard Monday's Late Show to promote his book, Boom! Voices of the Sixties: Personal Reflections on the '60s and Today, but soon chided David Letterman with some historical context after Letterman forwarded standard liberal claims about how the America of 2008 is in a "horrible" state thanks to the awful President George W. Bush, and when Letterman fretted about government inaction on global warming, Brokaw embarrassed the late night host by pointing out how he's a big carbon-producer since he drives a big vehicle and flies executive jets.

CBS's Early Show Offers Opposing Side in Global Warming Debate

In a rare case of balance, Wednesday's CBS Early Show highlighted both sides in the debate over declaring the polar bear an endangered species due to global warming as correspondent Daniel Sieberg declared: "They're at the top of the food chain at the top of the world, but their future is at the center of a political tug-of-war over drilling for oil versus protecting their habitat." Sieberg began his report with a dire prediction: "There are an estimated 20,000-25,000 polar bears in the Arctic region, but environmentalists warn that rising temperatures and disappearing sea ice will cause a 30 percent decline in their population over the n... The Parents Television Council is blasting CBS for airing a primetime show which features a serial killer as the hero.
On Sunday evening, CBS aired two episodes of Dexter back to back. The show follows the life of Dexter Morgan, played by Michael Hall. Dexter is a blood spatter analyst with the Miami Metro Police Department. However, he moonlights as a serial killer who murders only those who get away with grisly homicides.
